Parents in McLean's 22101 ZIP code rank No. 32 on a nationwide list of the most-stressed communities for raising children, according to a survey of more than 3,000 families published Tuesday.

The study, published by mental health and addiction treatment organization A Mission for Michael (AMFM), asked parents about child care costs, grocery bills, school pressures, commuting, work demands, screen-time battles and sleep deprivation. McLean landed ahead of Short Pump in Henrico County (No. 33) and just behind nearby Ashburn (No. 29). Scarsdale, New York, topped the list at No. 1.

AMFM wrote that McLean parents place significant emphasis on academic achievement and extracurricular success, creating expectations the organization called "exceptionally high." Many households, the study noted, devote considerable time and energy to helping children make the most of every available advantage.

Fairfax County Public Schools data reflects that academic intensity. McLean High School, which enrolled 2,414 students in 2024–25, offers 34 AP courses and produced the second-highest number of National Merit Semifinalists in Fairfax County for three consecutive graduating classes, behind only Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Districtwide, the percentage of eighth graders enrolled in Algebra 1 or higher jumped from 58.4% to 74.5% between the 2022–23 and 2025–26 school years, a pace that affects students at Cooper Middle School before they reach high school. FCPS also reported 37% more National Merit Semifinalists in the Class of 2026 than in the Class of 2025.
