Fairfax County Public Schools students passed state math tests at an 80% rate this year, marking a 19-percentage-point climb since 2021.

FCPS released its 2026 Standards of Learning results on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The district posted 80% pass rates in both reading and math and 76% in science. All three topped Virginia averages by 5 to 7 percentage points.

For families in the McLean and Langley pyramids, the numbers land one day into the new school year, which began Monday, Aug. 24. School-level pass rates for McLean High School, Langley High School and Cooper Middle School are not yet available. The district said the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will update its School Quality Profiles in the coming weeks.

The five-year math trajectory

The math gain is the headline number. FCPS students passed at just 61% in 2021, then climbed steadily: 74% in 2022, 75% in 2023, 76% in 2024, 78% in 2025 and 80% in 2026. Virginia's statewide math average sits at 73%.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid attributed the gains to the district's Strategic Plan, which she launched in 2023. "We are now at the midpoint of this work and we continue to see that commitment come to life," Reid said Tuesday, Aug. 25.

FCPS also reported that its year-over-year improvements exceeded statewide gains for nearly every student group in reading, math and science.

Algebra expansion reaches elementary schools

Reid highlighted a push to offer Algebra I to younger students. Sixth graders at Lemon Road and Haycock elementary schools took the Algebra I SOL (Standards of Learning test), and all passed. Many scored advanced or perfect, Reid said. FCPS plans to expand that early algebra access to more elementary schools.

What's next for McLean schools

Individual school data will appear on VDOE's School Quality Profiles site in the coming weeks. The state's School Performance and Support Framework accountability ratings, which include mastery, growth and graduation rates, are due in October 2026.

Statewide, WVTF reported that students in grades 3–8 passed reading at 72% and math at 69%. End-of-course pass rates were higher: 86% in reading, 85% in algebra and geometry and 75% in science.
