Fairfax County police are hosting a series of community safety events for families before Fairfax County Public Schools opens its doors on Monday, Aug. 24.
The department announced on X on Thursday, Aug. 13, that the lineup includes child safety and supervision town halls, traffic and pedestrian safety discussions, and "Ice Cream Cone with a Cop" gatherings where families can meet officers in a casual setting.
The announcement comes three weeks after a 9-year-old boy was killed July 23 while riding an electric scooter without a helmet near the 3000 block of Madden Court in Herndon, Northern Virginia Magazine reported. At a July 24 news conference following that crash, FCPD Capt. Chris Cosgriff urged parents: "Please have your kids wear helmets. Teach them the basic safety rules. Keep an eye on them."
The events also coincide with FCPD's Road Shark Wave 3 enforcement campaign, which targets speeding, aggressive driving, DUI and school zone violations through Sunday, Aug. 16. The first two waves earlier this year produced more than 25,000 citations and warnings, as we reported on speed enforcement Aug. 12.
Specific dates, times and locations for each event were not available in the department's initial announcement. FCPD directed residents to its Community Events Blog for the full schedule, which is updated weekly by the department's Public Affairs Bureau.
McLean families looking for local events can also subscribe to the McLean District Station newsletter at fairfaxcounty.gov/mailinglist under "Public Safety," or email [email protected].
McLean High School holds its freshman and new student orientation on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon. FCPD's non-emergency line is 703-691-2131; for emergencies, call 911.
