Blue Bottle Coffee, the Oakland, California-based specialty chain, opened its first Virginia location at Tysons Corner Center on Thursday, Aug. 13, giving McLean shoppers a new option for craft espresso and matcha without crossing the Potomac.
The kiosk sits in Fashion Court on the mall's first floor near Gap. There's no dedicated seating, but shared tables and chairs in the common area are available. FFXnow reported the first 150 customers received complimentary giveaways on opening day.
Blue Bottle already operates four cafes in Washington, D.C., and dozens more across the U.S. and East Asia. Founder James Freeman started the company in 2002, roasting beans in his Oakland apartment and selling them at farmers' markets.
He was a clarinetist by training.
Northern Virginia Magazine confirmed the Tysons kiosk is the brand's first Virginia outpost. The location at 1961 Chain Bridge Road, Suite KSK36L, is a smaller format than the brand's full cafes. In a media alert, Blue Bottle described the kiosk as blending its "East-meets-West sensibility" with the same quality standards as its full-size cafes worldwide. A company spokesperson told FFXnow in May that the format was built to serve customers quickly in a busy mall setting.
Signature drinks include a New Orleans-style iced coffee, craft matcha and a Kyoto-style vanilla bean shakerato. Hot and iced espresso beverages and food items are also on the menu. Orders can be placed in person or online for pickup.
Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The kiosk is closed Wednesdays. Sunday hours are 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the company's website.
The opening is part of a wave of retail turnover at the D.C. region's largest mall. Indian restaurant Dhoom and its fast-casual counter Naan & Beyond closed after just over two years, and the Southern-inspired chain Milk & Honey, owned by Reston-based Thompson Hospitality, is planning to take over their roughly 4,900-square-foot space. Modular sofa brand 7th Avenue opened a showroom at the mall on Aug. 7.
Tysons Corner Center is also expecting a "Bluey"-themed experience and the slime museum Sloomoo Institute in September.
