A 59-year-old Idylwood man was struck and killed by a Metrobus while crossing in a crosswalk with a walk signal at approximately 8:32 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, at the intersection of Columbia Pike and Carlin Springs Road in Bailey's Crossroads.
Fairfax County police identified the victim as Adam Ali. The bus was operating the F20 route, Metro's most heavily used line in Virginia, which runs between Tysons and Alexandria along Leesburg Pike (Route 7).
According to the FCPD Crash Reconstruction Unit, Ali was crossing Carlin Springs Road from west to east in the crosswalk when the front right side of a 2022 New Flyer Metro bus struck him during a right turn. The bus had been traveling eastbound on Columbia Pike and stopped at a red light at Carlin Springs Road. When the signal turned green, the driver began turning right onto Carlin Springs Road, hitting Ali in the crosswalk.
Ali was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died there.
The driver was not injured and remained at the scene. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors for the driver, according to FCPD's preliminary findings.
The crash occurred on a rainy evening, and Carlin Springs Road was closed in both directions while detectives investigated. A Metro spokesperson confirmed to FFXnow on the night of the crash that "the pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries, and CPR was initiated. Sadly, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at an area hospital."
Metro Transit Police said supervisors and officers are assisting with the investigation, which is being led by FCPD's Crash Reconstruction Unit under the Mason Police District.
As of early July, at least 11 pedestrians had died on Fairfax County roads in 2026, according to preliminary state data compiled by FFXnow. Ali's death adds to that toll.
