Fairfax County police officers are patrolling McLean roads around the clock this week as part of the department's third Road Shark enforcement wave, targeting speeding, reckless driving and impaired motorists through Sunday, Aug. 16.

The Fairfax County Police Department confirmed the operation is live in a post on X on Tuesday, Aug. 11, noting that 2nd Lt. Gerhard of the Traffic Safety Section had spoken with 7News DC reporter Lianna Golden about the campaign. Officers are deployed around the clock across every part of the county for the seven-day period, according to WJLA reporting published Monday, Aug. 10.

Virginia State Police are also participating. Drivers may encounter both county and state officers conducting stops.

The first two Road Shark waves produced more than 25,000 combined citations and warnings, according to WJLA. A DMV Daily summary broke that down further: the April operation generated 13,520 and the June wave added 11,791. Speeding is the most common violation caught, while reckless driving and DUI pose the greatest risk to other road users, according to enforcement data compiled by The DMV Daily.

Five motorcyclists have been killed on Fairfax County roads in 2026, a figure cited as a key reason for continuing the crackdown.

For McLean drivers

The enforcement coincides with daytime lane closures on the George Washington Parkway. Northbound lanes between Spout Run Parkway and Chain Bridge Road/Route 123 are closed from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday until Sept. 1 for tree maintenance. The closures do not affect morning or afternoon rush hours.

A fourth and final Road Shark operation is scheduled for October.
