Angie Yu, a senior at BASIS Independent McLean, won Virginia's top scholarship honor for high school senior women at the statewide Distinguished Young Women competition on Aug. 29.

Yu earned the title of 2027 Distinguished Young Woman of Virginia at Batten University, taking home $1,750 in scholarship funds along with first-place awards in the Talent and Fitness categories, the Fairfax Times reported. The program, which has awarded more than $124 million in scholarships over its 69-year history, evaluates participants on academic performance, leadership, physical fitness, self-expression and talent.

She will represent Virginia at the 70th America's Distinguished Young Women National Finals in Mobile, Alabama, scheduled for June 24-26, 2027.

Two other McLean students also earned recognition at the competition, which ran from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Batten University. Aimee Liu of McLean was named First Honoree and received the Scholastic Award along with a $750 scholarship. Annabelle Zhao of McLean earned the Self-Expression Award and a $250 scholarship. The three students collected a combined $2,750 in scholarship funds.

Yu, a Herndon resident who attends BASIS Independent McLean, serves as president of Project Smile Strong, a nonprofit focused on improving access to oral health care in underserved communities. She also conducts research on proteomics in dental diseases and has presented her findings at national conferences.

Yu is also a Chinese classical dancer. She has performed at venues including the Kennedy Center, the Chinese Embassy and Capital One Hall.
