The McLean Art Gallery opened a new exhibit called "City Life" on Wednesday, Nov. 4, in what the McLean Art Society expects will be one of its last shows at the Chesterbrook Shopping Center pop-up space. FFXnow first reported the exhibit and the gallery's timeline.

The gallery at 6224B Old Dominion Drive is scheduled to close sometime in January 2027, according to the McLean Art Society. Glenwood's, a Maryland-based steak and sushi restaurant, recently signed a lease for about 7,000 square feet at the shopping center, as FFXnow reported in October. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 ahead of a targeted fall 2027 opening.

The gallery has hosted exhibitions, workshops and events showcasing local artists since it opened in September 2025. The space was always envisioned as temporary, established with the support of Chesterbrook's owner, Federal Realty Investment Trust.

Reception Friday

An opening reception for "City Life" will be held Friday, Nov. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at the gallery. Visitors can meet the featured artists and enjoy live music, wine and refreshments.

The exhibit runs through Nov. 29, alongside a rotating collection of original work by McLean Art Society members. The gallery is open free to the public Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.

Searching for a new home

A McLean Art Society spokesperson told FFXnow the nonprofit is actively looking for a replacement site. "We are searching for a new location," the spokesperson said, adding that the group hopes to announce a new space by the end of the year.

The society said in a press release that the coming months represent a final chance for residents to see local artists' work at the gallery. It invited the public to "stop by and enjoy the remaining exhibitions before the gallery closes."

Even without a permanent gallery, the art society plans to stay active in the community. Work by its artists is shown September through May each year at the Spring Hill and Oakmont recreation centers. The society also has an art show on display at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Ave., through Nov. 20.
