Langley's high-scoring start to the season hit a wall Friday, Sept. 18, when Westfield held the Saxons scoreless for a full half and hung on for a 35-28 win.

The loss drops the Saxons to 2-1 after they had averaged more than 50 points per game in their first two contests. Westfield improved to 3-0, according to the Fairfax County Times.

Westfield scored twice in the first half, including a rushing touchdown by senior running back Casey O'Neal, to take a 14-0 lead into the break. Sophomore quarterback Aaron Preti also connected with running back PJ Sutherland for a second-quarter score.

The second half was a different game. Junior quarterback William Ayoub led four touchdown drives, pulling the Saxons back from the two-score deficit. Sophomore Aiden Mejia contributed on offense and special teams during the surge.

Westfield answered each time. Sutherland finished with three touchdowns on the night, and the Bulldogs matched Langley score for score to maintain the lead.

Langley had one final shot. Ayoub drove the Saxons down the field with a chance to tie at 35, but several incompletions ended the comeback bid. Penalties and flags for disputing officiating calls also hurt the Saxons throughout the second half.

"I thought we played well, and it was nice to get up early, and we knew going into the game they were explosive, especially in the second half, but we had to be ready," Westfield head coach Scott Vossler said.

O'Neal said the team would enjoy the win but still learn from it, get back to work and come back stronger.

Langley hosts Yorktown next, followed by games against Chantilly and Oakton.
