Fairfax County voters can start casting ballots for the Nov. 3 election on Friday, Sept. 18, at three locations across the county, according to the county.

The nearest early voting site to McLean is the North County Governmental Center at 1801 Cameron Glen Drive in Reston. The other two sites are the Fairfax County Government Center at 12000 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax and the Mount Vernon Governmental Center at 2511 Parkers Lane in Alexandria.

No application or reason is required. Any registered county voter can walk in and vote.

The Reston and Mount Vernon sites are open weekdays from 1 to 7 p.m. The Government Center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All three will also be open Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thirteen additional locations will open for the final 10 days of early voting starting Thursday, Oct. 22, through Saturday, Oct. 31. Those sites will be open weekdays from 1 to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 25, from noon to 5 p.m. Whether any of those sites are in or near McLean has not been announced.

What's on the ballot

The Nov. 3 ballot carries races for U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, three proposed amendments to the Virginia Constitution and two Fairfax County bond referendums totaling $255 million.

The Senate race pits Democrat Mark R. Warner against Republican Bert Mizusawa. Most McLean and Great Falls voters fall in the 10th Congressional District, where the race is between Democrat Suhas Subramanyam, Republican Dave T. Beckwith and independent Ahsen Mujeeb Malik. Voters can confirm their district at the county's elections page.

One bond question asks voters to authorize $180 million for the Fairfax County Park Authority to acquire land, build new parks and improve existing facilities. The other asks for $75 million to construct and expand community health and human services facilities. Both would add to previously authorized bond amounts.

The three constitutional amendments address reproductive rights, same-sex marriage and felony disenfranchisement. As we reported Sept. 16, Virginia recently reduced its felony voting restrictions, a change that restored eligibility for some Fairfax County residents.

Key deadlines

The deadline to register to vote or update a registration is Friday, Oct. 23. After that date, eligible residents may use same-day registration and cast a provisional ballot at an early voting location or at their precinct on Election Day.

The deadline to request a mail ballot is also Oct. 23. Completed mail ballots must be postmarked by Election Day if returned by mail, or received by 7 p.m. on Election Day if returned in person or by drop box. A 24/7 drop box sits outside the Fairfax County Government Center.

All early voting sites are wheelchair accessible and offer curbside voting. Ballots are available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Korean.
