A 53-year-old Chantilly woman using a wheelchair was struck and killed while crossing Route 50 in Greenbriar on Friday, Sept. 18, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said.

Theresa Flynn was using a mobility wheelchair to cross Route 50 from south to north at Plaza Lane, near Greenbriar Town Center, when a westbound Kia Rio hit her at 7:27 p.m., according to the FCPD's Crash Reconstruction Unit. Flynn was not in a crosswalk at the time.

She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

The driver of the Kia was not injured and stayed at the scene. Detectives said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver. Both the speed and alcohol determinations are preliminary.

The crash shut westbound Route 50 at Plaza Lane down to one lane on the evening of Sept. 18 while investigators worked the scene. FCPD posted on X asking drivers to find alternate routes.

The Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate. Victim specialists from the Major Crimes Bureau's Victim Services Division have been assigned to assist Flynn's family, the department said.

Flynn's death is part of a mounting toll across Fairfax County. The Fairfax County School Board cited at least 15 pedestrian fatalities countywide in 2026 in a letter released the week of Sept. 19, according to WUSA9. That count predates Flynn's death and comes from the school board, not an official police tally. The Route 50 corridor stretches through western Fairfax County into the Tysons and McLean area, and pedestrian safety along high-speed, multi-lane roads remains a concern countywide.
