The Langley Saxons face their toughest test of the season Friday when unbeaten Oakton visits McLean at 7 p.m.
The Cougars arrive at 4-0, their best start since 2021. Langley enters at 4-1 after beating Chantilly 34-17 on Sept. 25, according to MaxPreps. Both teams have been prolific on offense. Oakton has scored 178 points through four games, per MaxPreps. Langley has put up 205.
Oakton's marquee win came Sept. 18 against Colonial Forge. The Cougars upset the heavily favored Eagles 32-23 in Vienna, the Fairfax County Times reported. Colonial Forge had routed Oakton 42-14 a year earlier. Senior Deylen Jones, a Harvard commit and two-way starter, returned a punt for a touchdown in the first half and scored twice more after halftime to lead the comeback.
"We've been on the wrong end of so many games like this … And tonight, we were on the right end of it because we prepared and we worked hard and we stuck together," Jones told the Fairfax County Times after the game.
Head coach Said Aziz, a former Centreville assistant who replaced Brian Slay, is Oakton's third head coach in three seasons. His players doused him with water as the clock wound down against Colonial Forge.
Before the Colonial Forge upset, the Cougars opened with a 49-7 win over Edison on Aug. 28, blanked Justice 49-0 on Sept. 3 and beat Woodson 48-28 on Sept. 10.
Langley's offense has been just as explosive. The Saxons opened with a 53-14 win over Fairfax on Aug. 28 and a 57-14 rout of Herndon on Sept. 3. Langley lost to Westfield 35-28 on Sept. 10 in its only defeat. The Saxons responded with a 33-0 shutout of Yorktown on Sept. 18 and the Chantilly victory.
Kickoff is Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. in McLean.
