Chip City Cookies is gone. The national cookie chain announced Friday, Oct. 2, that it is closing every one of its remaining locations, including the McLean store.

The shutdown follows Virginia closures we reported Oct. 1 at Tysons Corner Center and in Arlington's Clarendon and Shirlington neighborhoods. Those exits left the chain with 24 stores in New Jersey, New York and Texas. Now those are shuttered too.

Chip City cited economic conditions in a statement, saying the decision came after extensive efforts to keep the business stable amid what it called significant economic headwinds, WTOP first reported. The chain also had a location in Bethesda, Maryland.

Founders Peter Phillips and Teddy Gailas started the brand in New York City. The company's closure statement referenced 10 years of operation. At its peak, Chip City operated more than 45 locations and was known for gooey, 5.5-ounce cookies with a rotating flavor menu, FFXnow reported. The chain first reached Virginia in 2024 and opened at Tysons Corner Center in late August 2025, replacing the short-lived Z Ice Cream and Pastries in the mall.

Gift card redemption

McLean customers holding Chip City gift cards or coupons have a narrow window to use them. MidnighTreats, an Arlington bakery inside Ballston Quarter at 4238 Wilson Blvd., Level C, is honoring Chip City gift cards and coupons through Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The terms: bring the physical card, which must be surrendered at redemption. The balance will be verified on the spot. One redemption per customer.

MidnighTreats, which also operates a location at 1301 U Street NW in Washington, D.C., said it is hiring and encouraged former Chip City employees to apply through its website.

No information is available on what will replace the McLean Chip City space. The Oct. 14 gift card deadline at MidnighTreats Arlington is the next date for affected customers to act.
