A social group at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean has met monthly since 1971.

The Second Saturday Set started when two young mothers volunteering in the church nursery began talking about the challenges of moving to a new city and leaving old friends behind. They invited other families to a party, children included.

More parties followed.

"There was one party, then another and another," member Cathy Gaugler said in a church-submitted post on Patch. "We have been with each other through happy times like new babies, graduations, children's weddings and grandchildren, and hard times like medical conditions and losses—just like a family."

Fifty-five years later, the group remains active at the church, which was established in 1846 at the corner of Great Falls Street and Chain Bridge Road. Members have held leadership positions, led mission efforts and supported local organizations including SHARE of McLean and Second Story, a teen shelter that began in 1972 in a trailer on the church grounds.

The Rev. Dr. Scott Ramsey, the church's pastor, highlighted the group during a summer sermon series on building community connections.
