Fairfax County Public Schools is hiring bus drivers at $28.43 an hour and letting candidates complete physicals, fingerprinting and interviews in a single visit.

The district's "Transportation One Stop Shop Job Fair" runs Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lorton Center, 8101 Lorton Rd., Lorton. No pre-registration is required, according to the district's announcement. FCPS buses serve students across the county, including families in the McLean and Langley High School pyramids.

Three positions are open: school bus driver ($28.43/hour), transportation van driver ($21.22/hour) and transportation attendant ($20.10/hour). The bus driver pay scale tops out above $31 an hour, and drivers are eligible for annual step increases subject to School Board approval.

FCPS provides a paid six-to-eight-week training program for bus drivers, who must be at least 19 years old and pass a physical exam, drug screen and background check. The district supplies the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training. Van drivers must be at least 21 and hold a valid license.

Transportation attendants help students, including students with disabilities, board and exit buses safely. They may operate wheelchair lifts and secure seat restraints.

Benefits for all three roles include 12 paid non-working days, retirement, health and dental plans, life and disability insurance, and advancement opportunities. Infant and preschool-age children and grandchildren may ride along with drivers.

Morning shifts typically run 6 to 9:30 a.m.; afternoon shifts run 1:30 to 5 p.m. Full-time drivers are guaranteed a minimum of 30 hours per week, with extra hours available.

FCPS runs nearly 1,600 diesel buses covering about 85,000 miles every school day, WTOP reported in September. Superintendent Michelle Reid told WTOP in August that roughly 130,000 students ride FCPS buses. "FCPS has one of the largest school bus fleets in the nation," Reid said.

Candidates should bring a valid ID and two completed HR-125 professional reference forms. Mobile fingerprinting will be available as availability permits.
