On the first day of school Monday, Aug. 24, 201 McLean High School students walked into Langley High School instead of their old building. The reassignment is the most visible local consequence of Fairfax County Public Schools' first comprehensive boundary review in about 40 years.

The change eliminates a split feeder pattern and an attendance island that had sent a pocket of neighborhood students to McLean while surrounding families fed into Langley. It drops McLean High's capacity utilization from 109% to 100%, according to WTOP.

That brings the school to full capacity without overcrowding.

The Fairfax County School Board approved the divisionwide boundary plan on Jan. 22 with an 8-3 vote. Board members Mateo Dunne, Ryan McElveen and Ilryong Moon voted against it. McElveen warned at the January meeting that the decision would have life-changing consequences for children and reshape communities in ways the board could not fully anticipate.

Countywide, 1,697 students were reassigned, down from Superintendent Michelle Reid's initial proposal of 2,210 after intense community pushback in the two weeks before the vote spared 513 students.

McLean's pyramid also sees 107 students move from Longfellow Middle School to Cooper Middle School, eliminating another split feeder.

"Our real goal is to make sure that every classroom has a reasonable class size, and that each school is maximally utilized in terms of space," Reid told WTOP in an interview published Sunday, Aug. 23.

Some reassigned students may opt to stay at their previous school depending on grade level, but the district has said those families would lose bus transportation.

The boundary review, shaped with help from K-12 consulting firm Thru Consulting, followed more than a year of public meetings and revisions. Board policy now requires a comprehensive review every five years. Reid has said some neighborhoods could be reviewed sooner, with recommendations expected by January 2027.

Dranesville District representative Robyn Lady, whose seat covers McLean High, was among the eight board members who voted in favor of the plan, according to the Jan. 22 vote record.

McLean High School's Back to School Night is Wednesday, Aug. 26, starting at 5 p.m. with a resource fair and teacher meetings beginning at 6:10 p.m.
