Mookie's BBQ in Great Falls will donate proceeds from its large chocolate chip cookie sundae starting Friday, Oct. 16, as part of a weeklong breast cancer research fundraiser.

The barbecue spot at 1141 Walker Road is one of just four Fairfax County restaurants taking part in this year's Bakes for Breast Cancer campaign, which runs through Thursday, Oct. 22, as first reported by FFXnow. The national nonprofit asks participating eateries to give either 100% of proceeds from a select dessert or 50% of proceeds from their full dessert menu.

Carol Sneider, founder of Bakes for Breast Cancer, established the organization in 1999 in honor of her mother, who died from breast cancer at 43. Sneider said in a press release that the group has worked to fund breast cancer research through community dessert sales, and that the statistics on people affected by the disease remain alarming.

Since its launch, the nonprofit has raised more than $2.5 million to support oncologists engaged in clinical research. More than 5,000 businesses have participated across 10 states, according to a press release cited by FFXnow.

The campaign first reached the D.C., Maryland and Virginia region in October 2024. Last year's Fairfax County lineup included AKB at Archer Hotel in Tysons, Bourbon Boulevard in Chantilly, Guapo's and Tatté Bakery and Café in Reston. None of those restaurants are returning for 2026.

Joining Mookie's BBQ this year are Bagel Joy in Fair Lakes, selling pink ribbon sugar cookies; Hollin Hall Pastry Shop in Alexandria, offering red velvet, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes; and Sorrento Grill in Herndon, serving masghati shirazi, a traditional Persian sweet infused with saffron.

Brian Varani, owner of Mookie's BBQ, opened the restaurant in 2015. The fundraiser gives Great Falls diners a reason to order dessert at the Walker Road spot, where the chocolate chip cookie sundae will channel dollars directly to breast cancer researchers through Oct. 22.
