A driver struck a 15-year-old girl riding an electric bicycle Monday, Oct. 19, in a crosswalk near McLean High School, hospitalizing her with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened at the intersection of Westmoreland Street and Clearview Drive, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said on X, as first reported by FFXnow. The adult male driver stayed at the scene and was cited for reckless driving, a Class 1 misdemeanor in Virginia that carries up to 12 months in jail and a maximum $2,500 fine.
"The teen was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries," the FCPD said on X. "The adult male driver remained on scene and was cited for reckless driving."
The scene cleared before 9:30 a.m. Officers continue to investigate.
The crash is the latest in a string of collisions involving students near Fairfax County schools this fall. McLean High School was among 10 high schools where crossing guards were removed when the county cut $1.89 million from its fiscal year 2027 budget. Guards were restored after a wave of crashes in late August and September.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Sept. 15 to approve $707,908 for 11 full-time police positions covering 11 crossings at those schools for the rest of the school year. Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay said coverage would come from a mix of uniformed officers and private contractors.
The FCPD has not confirmed whether the restored crossing guard at McLean High School is stationed at the Westmoreland Street and Clearview Drive intersection or at the school's other entrance off Davidson Road.
The Sept. 15 vote followed several crashes involving Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students. They included the Sept. 9 death of a 13-year-old Frost Middle School student who was riding an e-bike near Fair City Mall in Fairfax City. The garbage truck driver in that crash was charged with careless driving and inflicting death on a vulnerable road user.
Before the funding vote, supervisors also created a joint working group with the school board to address broader transportation safety around schools. That group is expected to bring proposals in time for fiscal year 2028 budget discussions next spring.
A Fairfax County Department of Transportation study of the Westmoreland Street corridor recommended extending the curb and relocating bus stops at Clearview Drive. That study dates to 2020, and it is unclear whether those improvements have been built.
