The Harris Teeter at 8200 Crestwood Heights Drive closed July 20, 2025, after 16 years in McLean. A MassLive review in August 2026 confirmed it among 39 Kroger-owned stores shut down as part of a 60-store nationwide closure plan.

The 60,000-square-foot grocery store had anchored the ground floor of the Lofts at Park Crest, a mixed-use development near the Tysons corner of McLean, since January 2009. When it opened, it was the first grocery store to serve the Tysons area in two decades, FFXnow reported.

Harris Teeter, a subsidiary of Kroger, employed roughly 100 to 120 workers at each of the five closing locations. All were offered transfers to other stores, according to a company spokesperson quoted by FFXnow in June 2025.

The McLean store was one of five Harris Teeter locations that closed in summer 2025 after what the company called a "strategic market review." The others were two stores in Arlington, one in North Bethesda, Maryland, and one in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Kroger's nationwide pullback

Kroger disclosed a $100 million impairment charge in its first-quarter 2025 earnings release on June 19, 2025, announcing the 60-store closure plan. The closures came after courts blocked Kroger's proposed merger with Albertsons.

Ron Sargent, then Kroger's chairman and interim CEO, said at the time that "not all of our stores are delivering the sustainable results we need," according to MassLive's reporting.

As of August 2026, 39 of the 60 planned closures were complete. The program spans multiple Kroger banners, including Fred Meyer, King Soopers and QFC, according to USA TODAY reporting. Kroger operates more than 2,700 stores nationwide.

Greg Foran, who became Kroger's CEO in February 2026, has continued the cost-cutting push. He told investors during the company's first-quarter 2026 earnings call that "our operating costs have been growing faster than our sales," according to Retail TouchPoints.

What shoppers have nearby

The nearest Harris Teeter locations are now near the Dunn Loring Metro station and at the West Broad apartments in Falls Church City, according to FFXnow. Other grocery options within about two miles of the Crestwood Heights corridor include Lidl, Whole Foods and Walmart. A Safeway sits at 6244 Old Dominion Drive in McLean, and a Balducci's is at 6655 Old Dominion Drive.

The space is empty. No public filings or announcements have surfaced about a replacement tenant for the 60,000-square-foot storefront at the Lofts at Park Crest.
