Fairfax County middle and high school students are spending part of their summer in classrooms at Oakton High School, recovering course credits and working through algebra before the new school year begins.

The Credit Recovery Academy and Algebra Power Up programs at Oakton are drawing students from eight high schools and seven middle schools across the district, according to Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid's Weekly Reflections published Sunday. Credit Recovery allows students in grades 7 through 12 to earn back one high school course credit. Algebra Power Up is a math enrichment program for rising middle schoolers preparing for higher-level coursework.

In teacher Lena Zein's Algebra Power Up classroom, rising eighth graders worked through algebra problems. A student named Amar told Reid he signed himself up for the program so he'd be ready for Algebra I in the fall. Reid also toured Caroline England's Algebra 2 classroom, Nadia Akram's Geometry classroom and Michael Jeffry's biology classroom during her Saturday visit.

Levi Folly, senior manager of summer learning who greeted Reid at Oakton, is retiring at the end of the summer after 40 years with FCPS.

Reading and enrichment at Dogwood Elementary

At Dogwood Elementary School, the SOAR (Summer Olympians Aspire and Reach) program uses small-group instruction to build reading skills for early-grade students. In Rachel Barranco's first-grade classroom, students were reading and writing. Down the hall, Brittany Linovitz's fifth graders bowled as part of a fractions lesson.

The Young Scholars program, also running at Dogwood, targets students with high academic potential from groups historically underrepresented in advanced academics, according to the FCPS program page. In Taylor Gebauer's upper-grades classroom, students presented inventions to help the environment at a "Share Fair," including robots to clean the ocean and pick up trash.

Langley's Jacques earns softball honor

Reid's reflections also announced that Langley High School's Norah Jacques was named VHSL Class 6 Softball Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season.
