A Fairfax County Public Schools bus attendant faces four counts of assault and battery after police said he struck a student in the head.

Sung Soo Bang, 73, of Burke surrendered to police and was released on a summons issued by a magistrate, according to Patch, which first reported the City of Fairfax police account. The alleged incidents occurred on a school bus transporting students to a summer program in July.

City of Fairfax police said they were notified July 24 of a reported assault involving an FCPS bus attendant and a student. Detectives obtained and reviewed video from the bus. The footage showed Bang allegedly striking the student in the head.

Investigators also identified additional incidents in which they said Bang allegedly assaulted the same student during July. Police did not disclose the student's age, name the summer program or provide details about the other alleged assaults.

The Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office reviewed the case and determined there was sufficient probable cause to pursue criminal charges, police said.

The charges are allegations. Bang is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

FCPS has not publicly addressed Bang's employment status or the charges.

Bang has a pending court date in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. No specific date has been announced. Police said no booking photo was available.

The case surfaces as FCPS prepares new bus safety measures for the 2026-27 school year. Superintendent Michelle Reid told WTOP on Aug. 24 that the district was "adding an additional layered safety measure where every FCPS student riding a bus will receive a student ID card."

Reid's comments addressed the district's bus fleet broadly and were not made in response to the Bang case. FCPS serves roughly 130,000 students on one of the largest school bus fleets in the country.
